Tustin AYSO Programs

The Tustin AYSO soccer club offers multiple standard primary and advanced play programs. Tustin AYSO is the ONLY Youth Soccer Club in Tustin to offer a program for players from 4-19 years of age and to serve all players from those with special needs to extraordinary ability on our select teams. A full six levels of competition are available to match the player's ability. Additionally, through a strong network of AYSO clubs throughout the state, the playoff structure begins locally at the Mayor's Cup and extends through the Area and Section hierarchy to finish at the State Championships.

Standard Primary Program

Summer, Fall and Spring Seasons

This is the primary program of AYSO that includes all ages and over 90% players. To join, sign-up at one of our registration events in May or July, please visit our registration pages for details and registration options.

How to play on a team: Sign-up during the normal registration process. Information is available on our registration page. AYSO maintains the philosophies of EVERYONE PLAYS and OPEN REGISTRATION, this means that we accept all players regardless of ability and will continue to do so as long as we have space available.

How to coach a team: During the player registration process, volunteer to coach a team. Additionally, contact the division coordinator of the division you'd like to coach. Coaches must complete Safe Haven certification and appropriate age-specific training.

Standard Primary Progression and Format

In the standard primary program offering of Tustin AYSO, we have leagues for 4 to 19 year-old's split into 20 divisions (U5,U6,U7,U8,U9,U10,U12,U14,U16,U19 - all ages have a separate boys and girls division). This 15-year program is designed to allow for the development of the player through four stages as defined by the US Soccer Federation:

Initial stage: 4 years of introductory soccer in U5 - U8, also known as 'clinic play'. In this stage, the players play short sided 3 v 3 to 5 v 5 games without the distraction of standings or goalkeepers (The English FA is implementing no season standings up through U11). An age-specific program is provided and taught to the coaches to teach essential technical skills to the players to best introduce them to soccer without complicating the game.
Basic stage: 4 years from U9 - U12 where we begin using the full Laws of the Game, maintain standings and a playoff structure. This is the age where we also introduce goalkeepers and further expand the skills taught to the players with a beginning of tactics, but training continues to be primarily concentrated on techniques. Techniques and other basic movements like balance and coordination have a much greater lasting effect when learned prior to age 12 and so we teach our coaches to concentrate on these aspects.
Intermediate stage: 2 years of transition playing the full-sided game where tactics are increasingly taught and techniques are reinforced.
Advanced stage: 5 years finishing their youth career playing divisions U16 and U19.

Field Size is a guide and not exact, the actual field you play on may vary in size. Under Max Roster Size, 'split field' means that the teams will split their team in two and play on two side-by-side fields. Items new for 2012 are highlighted in green: Field Size: adjusted to give more space between the penalty area and touch lines. Goal Size: As one 10 year-old asked, "Why do I have to defend a goal the same size of Tim Howard?"

VIP Program

Fall Season

For players who have special needs, we have our VIP program. These games are played on Sunday afternoons between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. This program invites all persons of any age. Please visit our VIP section for information.

How to play on a VIP team: Registration is done at the normal registration days. When registering, inform the staff that you are registering a VIP player. On most days, we have a VIP coordinator present to assist with the process. Please clearly indicate VIP on your form.

Under-8 Graduation Series

Winter Season

This program is made available for U8 players in preparation for the big changes in advancing to U9. This season plays during January and February when the older divisions are playing their all-star season. How to referee for your team: Each team will need to have referees to officiate the games during the season. The coach is not allowed to referee their own game. This will be good for the future as in the U9 division and above, parents are needed to earn referee points for their teams. You'll not only be helping the kids play today, but supporting your child's teams in the future. To instructions on how to sign up, visit our New Referees page.

Under-8 Graduation Series Format

The U8 Graduation Series follows most of the format of the U9 regular season. However, there are no standings or playoffs.

Referee	Coaches act as the referee, no assistant referees.	3-person certified referee team (1 center referee and 2 assistant referees), coaches may not referee their own game. Parents, if certified, may referee the game.

In Tustin, the Advanced Play Program includes the All-Star, Spring Select and EXTRA seasons. Players commonly first enter the program when selected for an All-Star team and then asked to continue onto a Spring Select team. They may also tryout to join an EXTRA team. Only 10% of players play at this level.

All-Stars

Winter Season

The best players from the Fall season of the standard primary program are inivited for an opportunity to play together in competition with other regions. These teams are formed in November and play in January and Feburary. Please visit our Advanced Play section for more information.

All-Star champions are invited to play in the Section 11 Tournament in Feburary or March. Section 11 Tournament champions advance to the California State Championships in March.

How to play on an All-Star team: Do well in your regular season games! Coaches will observe regular season games to select players and are strongly discouraged from having a tryout.

How to coach an All-Star team: Complete the APP coach application and submit it before the deadline. Coaches are appointed based on many factors, both objective and subjective, and a variety of factors, including experience, player retention and coach certifications held.

EXTRA Program

Fall and Spring Seasons

The EXTRA program is designed for players with the ability, desire and dedication to play at a higher competitive level. These teams are formed through a tryout process in the Spring. For players that are interested please visit our Advanced Play section for dates and information. EXTRA players may not play concurrently on a standard primary team and are not eligible for all-stars.

How to play on a Fall EXTRA team: Attend the tryouts in February and March. The coach will receive an evaluation from the tryout coordinator and select players.

How to play on a Spring EXTRA team: These teams are formed by coaches and player selection is at the discretion of the coach. Typically, this is a continuation of a Fall EXTRA team. However, there is no requirement that all players are invited to continue and no condition that one continues with their team or must have played on a Fall EXTRA team.

How to coach an EXTRA team: Complete the APP coach application and submit it before the deadline. Coaches are appointed based on many factors, both objective and subjective, and a variety of factors, including experience, player retention and coach certifications held. The previous year's EXTRA coach will be given preferential consideration, but is not guaranteed to be appointed.

How to referee for your team: Each team will need to have referees to officiate the games during the season. Parents are needed to earn referee points for their teams. In EXTRA, referee points are earned to qualify for the post-season tournament. To instructions on how to sign up, visit our New Referees page.

Spring Select

Spring Season

The spring select season involves ages Under-9 and older and runs from March to May. This is a select league where teams are formed by the coaches and compete at a level considered to be of All-Star or higher caliber teams. Each coach must first be approved to have a spring team by the Advanced Play coordinator. The coaches have final authority on who is invited to join the team and the method of choosing those players. These teams will sometimes continue playing into the Summer as tournament or travel teams participating in tournaments.

How to play on a Spring Select team: These teams are formed by coaches and player selection is at the discretion of the coach. Typically, this is a continuation of an All-Star or EXTRA team. However, there is no requirement that all players are invited to continue and no condition that one continues with their team or must have played on an All-Star or EXTRA team.

How to coach a Spring Select team: Contact the Advanced Play coordinator. Coaches that did not coach an All-Star, EXTRA, U16 or U19 team that is continuing will be required to complete the APP coach application and demonstrate they will be able to form a team that can compete at the Spring Select level. Continuing coaches may be asked to complete the application at the discretion of the Advanced Play coordinator.

Tournament or Travel Teams

Year-round, but most commonly in Summer

This is not an official season, coaches build these teams by inviting players and entering tournaments. These tournament teams often play locally in one or more of the many tournaments offered nearby. Teams also have the option of traveling anywhere to play in tournaments. Common destinations are Santa Barbara, Hawaii, Bermuda and Europe. The substantial costs for travel and tournament entry are the responsibility of the parents, the region does not offer any financial aid to these teams or players.

How to play on a tournament team: These teams are formed by coaches and player selection is at the discretion of the coach.

How to coach a tournament team: Contact and get approval from the Advanced Play coordinator. Note that regional signatures are required to enter each tournament and all tournaments require that payment be in the form of a regional check.

Player and Coach selection notes for all APP Programs

While we believe that the coach must have primary control over player selection in all APP Programs, we do have oversight in an attempt to avoid problems. Chosen players are subject to approval by a designated committee, mainly to avoid situations like a friend being selected over a significantly more qualified candidate.

Specific notes for All-Stars: There are no conditions for a minimum or maximum number of players taken from each team for All-Star selection. Coaches are encouraged spread out the selection across all or most of the teams and must review the top players from each team before making their final selections. All coaches from the regular season are enouraged to submit their recommendations, there is no minimum or maximum number of players that can be recommended.

The playing ability of the coach's child is considered as part of the coach application and coaches whose child would have not otherwise have been in consideration to make the team will likely not be accepted.
